| Does your family support your decision to be a sister? |
Yes, my family is supportive of my decision. Just as I have had to gather information and slowly grow in my confidence in my call to religious life, my parents have also had a gradual process of acceptance. I think my parents’ initial reluctance to encourage my call to religious life was because they were thinking about Maria in “The Sound of Music” whose ultimate happiness came in leaving the convent to get married. They were probably also thinking about the nuns in “Sister Act” who were either stern and old fashioned or else giddy and naïve. In real life, Presentation Sisters are ordinary people with an extraordinary commitment to service and prayer. I think my parents worried that if I became a Sister they would never see me again like the actress Audrey Hepburn in the old movie “The Nun Story.” Just like my married siblings, I share some holidays with my Presentation Sisters and some holidays with my family. One year, one of the Sisters came to my parents’ house with me for Christmas. Last year, my family all stayed at my local community’s house for a weekend to celebrate Thanksgiving with us.
